Fire Defensive woes A Lion roars again

The Fire lost their 8th straight match across all competitions on Saturday August 11th .The Fire lost 1-0 once again failing to keep a clean sheet. Despite many chances they were unable to record a goal in the match. The Fire currently have a negative fourteen goal differential, or they have given up fourteen more goals than they scored.

Their current streak began in a 3-2 loss away to Vancouver, which was followed by a thrilling 4-3 loss to the Philadelphia Union. Former player David Accam scored the game winning goal his first of the season. The Fire lost back to back games to Toronto one at home and one away. The first game by a score of 2-1 and the second 3-0.

The Fire bowed out of the Open Cup Competition in a 3-0 loss in Philadelphia to the Union. The team vows to keep fighting until the bitter end to make the playoffs. Head coach Veljko Paunovic spoke of a meeting he had with the players in his post-game press conference after the loss to the New York Red Bulls.

He also had great praise for Bastian Schweinsteiger after the match, for his defensive play during the match. His excellent play earned him the Man of the Match honors. I am certain that Schweinsteiger could play any position on the pitch, including Goalkeeper.

A high point in the match came in the 73rd minute when midfielder Michael De Leeuw replaced forward Luis Solignac. It was the first time in more than 10 months that de Leeuw has seen minutes on the pitch since suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear in 2017.lHe came on to oud cheers and a standing ovation. De Leeuw has always been a fan favorite. It was a long road back for the player affectionately known as the Lion, his recovery has been documented for fans. Homegrown player Djordje Mihailovic who also suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear at around the same time as de Leeuw made the gameday roster but did not see any minutes on the pitch.

The Fire will not give up till there is absolutely no chance of making the playoffs. They have 9 matches left to turn the season around, but there is almost no margin for error. They will have the first chance when they travel to Montreal to take on the Impact. The Impact has 30 points and currently holds the last playoff spot. The Fire currently have 23 points, 7 points off of that spot. They are not mathematically yet ruled out of the playoffs, so a win on Saturday would give them a chance.
